Monday 17 August 2020

Single room (limited availability) £Nil

Our base is in Poland’s iconic and hugely popular medieval city of Krakow, rich in folklore, boasting unique architecture.  We start by visiting The Cloth Hall, one of Krakow’s most distinctive buildings, located on the Market Square. Also, we visit St Mary’s Basilica, possibly the most famous church in Poland.  St Mary’s contains a giant Gothic altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, Europe's greatest sculptor of the period. In addition, there is a guided tour of the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter. Once a town and now an inner suburb of Krakow, Kazimierz was badly damaged during the Nazi occupation. We continue with a guided tour to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the oldest salt mine in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are 800 steps to climb, of which 350 at the beginning take you down into the mine. You will have plenty of time for independent sightseeing on most days before evening dinner.  Finally, we depart Krakow and board our coach for the return transfer to the airport and our flight back to Leeds/Bradford.

Day 1

Our coach collects us from our local pick up point(s) for the transfer to Leeds/Bradford Airport where we board our flight to Krakow. We are met at the airport and transferred to our hotel where we are based for the next four nights. Dinner is served this evening at the hotel.

Day 2

This morning we have a guided tour of the Old Town including The Cloth Hall, one of Krakow's most distinctive buildings, located on the Market Square. It was erected as a centre for trade in the 14th century with the upper part being rebuilt in 1555 after a fire. We also visit St Mary's Basilica, possibly the most famous church in Poland. St Mary's contains a giant Gothic altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, Europe's greatest sculptor of the period. Sepulchral monuments of the Krakow rich and worthy fill every corner and wall paintings by Jan Matejko date back to renovations carried out between 1888 and 1891. The treasure house of the basilica is rich in priceless objects of art, including some 300 masterly embroidered ancient vestments. This afternoon gives us the chance for some independent sightseeing before meeting up at the hotel in the evening for dinner.

Day 3

After breakfast today, we have a morning guided tour of the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter. Once a town in its own right and now an inner suburb of Krakow, the Kazimierz Quarter was the centre of Jewish religion, culture and learning and the home of the city's large Jewish population before the war. Kazimierz was badly damaged during the Nazi occupation, with most of the residents either killed or deported to the nearby death camp of Auschwitz. Today Kazimierz has been rebuilt so that visitors can admire the restored historical architecture and experience daily Jewish life. The renewed interest in this area was brought about by the film "Schlindler's List", which was set in Kazimierz. This afternoon gives us the chance for some independent sightseeing before meeting up at the hotel in the evening for dinner.

Day 4

This morning we have a half day guided tour to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the oldest salt mine in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mine was once one of the world's biggest and most profitable enterprises in the days when salt was as commercially important as oil is today. Miners created an underground world out of the rock salt, including underground churches, statues and even chandeliers. There are 800 steps to climb of which 350 at the beginning take you down into the mine, comfortable shoes are advisable. Some parts of the route are step free, please advise us if you will need assistance as pre-booking is recommended. This afternoon gives us the chance for some independent sightseeing before meeting up at the hotel in the evening for dinner.

Day 5

Finally we depart Krakow and board our coach for the return transfer to the airport and our flight back to Leeds/Bradford. Our UK coach will meet us on arrival for the last leg of our journey back to our original departure point(s).
